X3F (camera RAW)

What is an X3F (camera RAW) file?

The X3F file extension represents a raw image format generated exclusively by Sigma digital cameras utilizing the Foveon X3 direct image sensor. Unlike traditional Bayer filter sensors that interpolate color data, the Foveon X3 captures red, green, and blue light at every pixel location in three vertical layers of silicon. The X3F file contains this uncompressed or losslessly compressed raw sensor data alongside a JPEG preview and proprietary metadata, requiring specific demosaicing algorithms to interpret the vertical color information.

How to open an X3F (camera RAW) file

Processing X3F files requires specialized raw conversion software capable of interpreting Foveon sensor data. Sigma's proprietary software, Sigma Photo Pro, provides the most accurate rendering. Third-party support is available in Adobe Lightroom (via Camera Raw) and open-source alternatives like Darktable and RawTherapee. Standard operating system image viewers generally cannot decode the raw X3F stream and will often only display the embedded JPEG thumbnail.

JPG

What is a JPG file?

JPG is functionally identical to the JPEG format, differing only in the file extension length, a legacy constraint from the MS-DOS 8.3 filename limit (which allowed only three characters for extensions). It implements the same ISO/IEC 10918 standard, using lossy compression based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Huffman coding to store photorealistic images. The file structure contains markers such as Start of Image (SOI) and End of Image (EOI) and supports color spaces like sRGB and CMYK, making it interchangeable with .jpeg files in all software contexts.

How to open a JPG file

As one of the most ubiquitous file types in computing, JPG files open natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux without external software. Default viewers like Microsoft Photos, Apple Preview, and Linux image viewers handle the format automatically. For editing or conversion, industry-standard tools including Adobe Photoshop, Paint.NET, and XnView provide extensive support. Web browsers universally render JPGs without plugins.

X3F to JPG

Why convert X3F to JPG?

X3F is an unprocessed sensor data format and JPG is a lossy format. JPG opens everywhere, while X3F doesn't.

Open it anywhere

X3F files don't open everywhere (none (needs a raw editor)). JPG works on every phone, computer and browser, so the image can be viewed, uploaded and shared without special software.

Turn a RAW photo into a finished image

X3F is unprocessed sensor data straight from the camera. Converting to JPG develops it into a normal image with the camera's colors applied, ready to share, print or post.

Much smaller files

JPG uses lossy compression, so the file is usually a fraction of the X3F size, which is quicker to email, upload and load on a website.
