Radiance HDR

What is an Radiance HDR file?

An HDR file (Radiance RGBE, .hdr or .pic) stores high dynamic range images using 32-bit floating-point-like color values, so it can record light far brighter and darker than a normal photo. It was created by Greg Ward in 1985 for the Radiance lighting simulation software and uses a simple run-length encoded format with a shared exponent per pixel.

HDR files are widely used in 3D rendering and visual effects as environment maps (HDRIs) that light a scene realistically.

How to open an Radiance HDR file

Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, Blender, Krita and HDR viewers such as HDRView open .hdr files. Standard photo viewers usually can't, and screens can't show the full range, so convert HDR to JPG or PNG to get a regular image you can view and share.

AVIF

What is an AVIF file?

The AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an open, royalty-free raster image container specified by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) in ISO/IEC 23000-12. It encapsulates image sequences or still images compressed with the AV1 video codec within the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container structure. AVIF supports high dynamic range (HDR) utilizing Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) or Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) transfer functions, wide color gamut (WCG), and 4:2:0, 4:2:2, or 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, offering superior compression efficiency over JPEG and WebP.

How to open an AVIF file

Native support for AVIF is available in modern web browsers including Google Chrome (v85+), Mozilla Firefox (v93+), and Safari (v16+). For local viewing, Windows 10 and 11 require the installation of the free 'AV1 Video Extension' from the Microsoft Store to enable support in the Photos app and File Explorer. macOS 13 (Ventura) and iOS 16 provide system-level support. Graphics editors like GIMP, Paint.NET, and Adobe Photoshop (via plugin) can also decode and edit these files.

Radiance HDR to AVIF

Why convert HDR to AVIF?

HDR is a lossless format and AVIF is a lossy or lossless format. AVIF supports transparency; HDR doesn't.

Much smaller files

AVIF can use lossy compression, so the file is usually a fraction of the HDR size, which is quicker to email, upload and load on a website.

Ready for transparency

AVIF supports transparent backgrounds. Convert first, then remove the background or layer the image over other graphics.

Faster websites

AVIF gives smaller files than JPG or PNG at the same visual quality, which makes pages load faster and can help Core Web Vitals and SEO.
