How to Make an Image Background Transparent (3 Easy Ways)

Make a logo, signature or photo background transparent: remove a white background instantly, cut out people and products with AI, and save as PNG.

A transparent background lets you put a logo on any color, a signature on any document, or a product photo on any website design. Which method is best depends on what's in your image.

Plain white or single-color background: instant

For logos, icons, signatures and clip art on a plain background:

  1. Open Make Background Transparent.
  2. Upload your image.
  3. Keep Background around the subject selected. It removes the background touching the edges and keeps white areas inside your design (like the middle of an "O").
  4. Click the button and download the transparent PNG.

If some of the background remains (often off-white or a faint shadow), raise the Tolerance a little and try again.

Signatures and text: remove every white pixel

For a signature on paper, you also want the white between the strokes gone:

  1. Photograph or scan the signature on white paper, in good light.
  2. In Make Background Transparent, choose Every pixel of one color and keep the color white.
  3. Raise the tolerance until the paper disappears but the ink stays solid.

People, pets and products: use AI

When the background is a real scene, a color-based tool can't tell the subject apart. Use Remove Background instead: an AI model finds the person, animal or object and cuts it out, hair and all. The result is a transparent PNG, or the subject on any color you choose.

Save in the right format

Transparency only survives in PNG or WebP. If you save as JPG, the transparent areas turn white. Our tools always give you PNG (or WebP if you choose it).

Finishing touches

  • Want rounded corners on a photo? Use Round Corners; the corners become transparent too.
  • Need the file smaller for a website? Convert the PNG to WebP, which keeps transparency at a fraction of the size.
