AVIF

What is an AVIF file?

The AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an open, royalty-free raster image container specified by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) in ISO/IEC 23000-12. It encapsulates image sequences or still images compressed with the AV1 video codec within the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container structure. AVIF supports high dynamic range (HDR) utilizing Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) or Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) transfer functions, wide color gamut (WCG), and 4:2:0, 4:2:2, or 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, offering superior compression efficiency over JPEG and WebP.

How to open an AVIF file

Native support for AVIF is available in modern web browsers including Google Chrome (v85+), Mozilla Firefox (v93+), and Safari (v16+). For local viewing, Windows 10 and 11 require the installation of the free 'AV1 Video Extension' from the Microsoft Store to enable support in the Photos app and File Explorer. macOS 13 (Ventura) and iOS 16 provide system-level support. Graphics editors like GIMP, Paint.NET, and Adobe Photoshop (via plugin) can also decode and edit these files.

SVG

What is an SVG file?

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) since 1999, SVG is an open standard that describes images using text-based XML markup, allowing them to be indexed, scripted, and compressed. Unlike raster formats, SVG images are resolution-independent, relying on mathematical paths (vectors) rather than pixels, making them essential for responsive web design and high-DPI displays.

How to open an SVG file

SVG files are natively supported by all modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari, which render the XML data directly. for editing, users require vector graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or CorelDRAW. Plain text editors like VS Code or Notepad++ can also open SVG files to view and modify the underlying XML source code.

Why convert AVIF to SVG?

AVIF is a lossy or lossless format and SVG is a vector format. SVG opens everywhere, while AVIF doesn't.

Open it anywhere

AVIF files don't open everywhere (chrome, edge, firefox and safari 16+; many apps can't open it yet). SVG works on all browsers, so the image can be viewed, uploaded and shared without special software.

Transparency is kept

Both formats support transparency, so transparent areas in your AVIF stay transparent in the SVG.

Sharp at any size

SVG stores shapes instead of pixels, so a traced logo or icon can be scaled to any size, from a favicon to a billboard, without blurring.
