What Is a JFIF File? How to Change JFIF to JPG

Why images save as .jfif on Windows, why websites reject them, and three ways to get a normal .jpg: convert online, rename, or fix the setting.

You save an image from a website and it ends up as image.jfif. Then a form refuses to upload it, or an app won't open it. The good news: a JFIF file is simply a JPEG image with a different file extension, and turning it into a normal .jpg takes seconds.

What is JFIF?

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It's the standard way JPEG image data is stored, and most .jpg files use it too. The only difference is the extension: .jfif instead of .jpg.

Some Windows versions associate JPEG images with the .jfif extension, so browsers like Chrome and Edge save downloaded images that way.

Method 1: Convert online

  1. Open the JFIF to JPG converter.
  2. Drop your .jfif files onto the page (up to 30 at once).
  3. Click Convert and download the JPGs, one by one or as a ZIP.

This is the most reliable option when you have several files, or when an app still rejects a renamed file.

Method 2: Rename the file

  1. In File Explorer, open the View menu and turn on File name extensions.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Rename.
  3. Change .jfif to .jpg and confirm.

Because the image inside is already JPEG, this works in most cases.

Method 3: Stop Windows saving .jfif

The extension comes from a Windows registry setting for the JPEG file type. Changing it is possible but fiddly and affects every program, so for most people converting or renaming as needed is simpler and safer.

Need a PNG instead?

If you want a lossless copy for editing, or plan to add transparency, convert JFIF to PNG.
