How to Compress an Image to 100 KB (or Any Size)

Get a photo under 100 KB, 50 KB or 20 KB for online forms and job portals, without it turning blurry. Works with JPG, PNG and HEIC.

Job applications, exam registrations, visa forms and government sites often demand photos and scans under 100 KB, 50 KB or even 20 KB. Phone photos are typically 3–5 MB, so they need to shrink a lot.

The fast way

  1. Open Compress Image to 100 KB.
  2. Upload your photo (JPG, PNG, HEIC and more).
  3. Click Compress Image and download it.

The compressor searches for the highest quality that fits under 100 KB. If a very large photo can't fit even at low quality, it's scaled down just enough.

Other sizes: 20 KB · 50 KB · 200 KB · 500 KB · 1 MB. Or type any size in Compress Image.

Get a better-looking result

Small targets are a budget: the fewer pixels you spend it on, the sharper each one looks.

  1. Crop away everything the form doesn't need (use Crop).
  2. Resize to the pixel size the form asks for, or around 1000 pixels wide if it doesn't say (use Resize).
  3. Then compress to the target size.

Use JPG for photos

Photos compress far better as JPG or WebP than as PNG. If a form accepts JPG, use it. For scanned documents with text, try PNG first and see if it fits.

Check the requirements

Many forms also specify:

  • Dimensions, for example 350 × 450 pixels for a passport-style photo
  • Format, usually JPG
  • Background, often plain white

Resize to the exact dimensions first, then compress to the size limit.

Frequently asked questions

Very small targets force low quality. Crop to what's needed and resize to the dimensions the form expects before compressing, so the quality budget goes further.
