Upload the wrong shape to Instagram and it gets cropped or squeezed. Upload the right size and it looks sharp in every feed. Here are the sizes to use.

Which post shape is best?
Portrait (4:5) takes up the most space in the feed, so it gets the most attention, and it fits the 3:4 profile grid better than squares. It's the best default for photos.
Resize in one click: portrait 1080 × 1350 · square 1080 × 1080 · story 1080 × 1920 · profile picture.
The 3:4 profile grid
Since early 2025, the profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 rectangle. Square posts get their left and right edges trimmed in the grid view (the full post still shows when opened). If your grid layout matters, post in 4:5 and keep key details away from the sides.
Carousels
A carousel holds up to 20 photos or videos. All slides take the shape of the first one, so resize them to the same size before posting. For a seamless panorama that scrolls across slides, split a wide image into equal pieces; see how to split a photo for Instagram.
Tips for sharp uploads
- Upload at 1080 pixels wide. Bigger images are downscaled by Instagram anyway.
- Upload JPGs for photos; Instagram recompresses everything.
- Keep text and faces away from the edges of stories (the top and bottom are covered by buttons).
